IRS Increases Educator Expense Deduction to $300 per Taxpayer

Where's my educators? K-12 teachers, aides, principals, and counselors?

The IRS has upped the educator expense deduction for 2022!

What is it: An up to $300 ($250 on 2021's return) deduction per taxpayer for un-reimbursed classroom supply purchases, including PPE. If you bought something, and then your employer paid you back for it, that does not count.

Who can claim it: K-12 teachers, instructors, counselors, principals, and aides that have worked at least 900 hours a school year in a K-12 school that provides elementary or secondary education.

What's included: Professional development course fees, books and supplies, PPE (masks, sanitizer, wipes, gloves, etc), computer equipment including software, and 'other materials' used in a classroom.

How: Keep your receipts and total them at the end of the year to include on your schedule 1 attached to your 1040 under adjustments. $300 maximum per taxpayer ($600 maximum on a joint return).
